Hollywood’s elite and hundreds of supporters gathered at the Beverly Hilton to support Lupus LA’s 15th Annual Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon on November 17, 2017. Among the attendees included host Paula Abdul, honoree Cara Dellaverson, Shanna Moakler, Kearran Giovanni, Emily V. Gordon and her husband Kumail Nanjiani. As part of the fundraiser, 200 luxury handbags were auctioned off. The handbags were donated by designers and supporters including celebrities Selena Gomez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Lena Dunham and Kris Jenner. The annual event raised over $300,000 for lupus research, advocacy and support for lupus patients.

A fashion presentation during the ceremony was hosted by Roberto Cavalli. NBC executive Cara Dellaverson and writer/producer of ‘The Big Sick’ Emily V. Gordon were honored with the 2017 Women of Achievement Award. Comedian Kumail Nanjiani presented his wife Emily V. Gordon with her award. Nanjiani commented on stage, “It’s not a pretty thing to see. Emily was laying there on the bed, very still. Her eyes were closed. I remember thinking ‘if she comes out of this, I think we’re going to get married’. That was the thought I had when I saw her like that. When Emily came out of the coma, she was miserable, but she was alive. I am forever grateful to the doctors and nurses that saved the life of the love of my life. You’ve truly changed our lives. Most of all, I want to thank Emily for fighting.”

Cara Dellaverson (diagnosed with lupus at age 19) praised the organization saying, “Lupus LA is a force of nature in their effort to educate and raise awareness. I have been living with lupus for a long time. I have also been living the life I have always wanted for myself. This is what I hope for everyone with this diagnosis, and this is what Lupus LA helps makes possible.”
