Actor Andy Garcia hosted the Shane’s Inspiration 16th Annual Gala on March 4, 2017. The “A Night in Old Havana” themed evening drew a large crowd including several celebrities such as Mena Suvari, JK Simmons and Scott Williams. The Cuban cabaret inspired fundraiser featured a cocktail reception, live/silent auctions, dinner, an awards ceremony, live music and dancing.
Shane’s Inspiration was established when founders Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams lost their son Shane Alexander Williams in 1997 after 2 weeks of birth. Shane suffered from spinal muscular atrophy. Had Shane survived, he would have been reliant on a wheelchair, during that time there were no existing accessible playgrounds in the Western United States. The grieving parents honored Shane’s life by forming the concept of creating accessible playgrounds for children with disabilities.
In 2000, the first universally accessible playground was built in Griffith Park named, “Shane’s Inspiration Playground” by the tireless efforts of Catherine, Scott, and their best friend Tiffany Harris. Since then, Shane’s Inspiration has built 63 inclusive playgrounds across the world including another 75 currently in development.
The organization’s mission is to cultivate a bias-free environment for children with disabilities by promoting education, developing community programs and creating inclusive playgrounds. Shane’s Inspiration thrives to unite children of all abilities. For additional information visit: http://www.shanesinspiration.org.
