Misty Copeland along with her fellow American Ballet Theatre (ABT) dancers arrived in Los Angeles on December 5th for the ABT Holiday Benefit. Principal Dancers Stella Abrera, Gillian Murphy, Cory Stearns and James Whiteside were also in attendance at the event which was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. ABT performed scenes of classics such as Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote and Benjamin Millepied’s Daphnis and Chloe. This one-night-only ballet soiree was sponsored by Harry Winston and the Lloyd E. Rigler-Lawerence E. Deutsch Foundation.
Misty Copeland is the first African American female principle dancer in the American Ballet Theatre in its 75 year history. She has been a lead performer in The Firebird, Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet and several other notable pieces. She has made several television, film and print appearances. Mattel has even rendered a Barbie doll in her likeness as the Firebird.
