Emmy-winning actor and autism advocate Ed Asner, Rosie O’Donnell, Dylan McDermott and Lou Diamond Phillips were among those who have helped raise over $63K for Autism Speaks on August 6th. This poker tournament raised money to support the Southern California chapter of Autism Speaks. Autism is a developmental disorder that causes communication difficulties, imparied social interaction and repetitive behavior. 1 in 68 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with autism.
Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, is devoted to funding research for treatments and finding a cure for autism. The organization also brings awareness of autism spectrum disorders and advocates the needs of those with autism and their families. In 2005, Autism Speaks was founded by Suzanne and Bob Wright (former vice chairman of General Electric and chief executive officer of NBC and NBC Universal), the grandparents of a child with autism. Autism Speaks has since raised $560 million to date.
